Now that restrictions are beginning to ease, I believe Canberra has a unique opportunity to lead the nation – safely welcoming customers back to cafes, restaurants and bars with a practical and flexible approach.

Unfortunately, as many business owners have told me, the ACT Government’s blanket 10 person limit is not viable for many in Canberra’s hospitality sector.

In this crucial time, I believe the key principle must be to keep staff and customers safe – not a one-size-fits-all rule about maximum occupancy.

Three different approaches which I think would be better are:

  1. Requiring venues to implement a minimum of 1.5 metres between dining groups;
  2. Limiting the number of patrons (e.g. 10 or 20) in different areas; or
  3. Limiting patronage to a percentage of current occupancy limits (e.g. 30 per cent of current occupancy and building up to 100 per cent in coming months)

Please let me know if you support this approach, or have other suggestions.
